The Scroll FAQ
(Frequently-Asked Questions)

Introduction

A few comments from someone who's seen it all here:

1) The people who come here have ideas and opinions, and are willing to state those opinions. This is good, it creates that which exists here. This is sometimes uncomfortable, it causes inflamed passions and even arguments.

2) Visitors tend to decrease in the summertime. Students off school, folks getting outside for a change. This is good.

3) The "what the hell happened to this place" questions are related largely to folks not recognizing the others at the site. Sure, a few troublemakers can shake the foundation occasionally, but often times this results in times of great unity and association. And past regulars often drop in for a quick visit...perhaps they have grown beyond the "workshop forum" that exists here, but one never forgets one's roots.

Overall, this is a great site, for it serves its purpose well. That might be easy to say, because I started this site. But only start it...it is what it is today, 60,000 pages and growing, because of the great folks who come here to learn and write. Some go on to become recognized in larger forums, begin performing at their local coffee shops as they gain confidence, get published. Those are WONDERFUL things, not cause for sorrow.

When a little poetry zine that started out on a whim becomes a place for inspiration for a method of communication I find so dear, and for so many people, I can find it nothing but incredible.

So, stay if you wish. Write if you wish. Practice. Get better. Then go out and save the world with your thoughts in beautiful form. I'll be the first to thank you.

Best wishes,

Thom

Is the Critic Corner just for poetry, or is it for short stories too?

The Critic Corner is for whatever ARTISTIC WORKS you might want to write, whether it be poetry, prose, stories, rants, songs, or tripe. All varities should fit into the format.

One thing you should note, from the above statement, is that the Critic Corner is designed for the display of artistic works. Therefore, no comment or personal note will be allowed to be a primary item on the Critic Corner - that is, you can include comments or personal notes as a RESPONSE to a work, but only an artistic work can be a primary item. Such a entry and its follow-ups will be removed.

I submitted a work to one of the Interactive Pages (Critic Corner, Poetry Tag, Tale Tag, etc.) and now I can't seem to find my work. Where did it go?

Most likely, your work is not appearing because your web browser is caching the older page. First, try refreshing your page by hitting the Refresh button on your browser. If this doesn't work, try holding the "Shift" key on your keyboard while you click the Refresh button.

In the long-run, you should go into your browser "Preferences" (Netscape) or "Options" (Internet Explorer), go into the Advanced settings, find the "Caching" options, and set your browser to reload the page "Every Time" (rather than "Once per Session" or "Never").

If none of these suggestions works, you might have a web cache program (such as Squid) running at your site, causing you to see older versions of the pages. If this is so, go talk to your site's support folks.

One last note here: PLEASE DO NOT HIT "SUBMIT" more than once. Trust me, it is NEVER necessary to do this...

Does The Scroll welcome all types of works? Are certain types of works unsuitable for The Scroll? Can I curse like a sailor? Are you going to censor me?

Ahhhh, the very toughest of questions...

The Scroll holds in very high regard the right to free speech. There is no absolutism of beliefs here - no right and wrong. No religious morality or majority. No ban on dirty words, sexual thoughts, or dark explorations. This is not a children's site, though children are welcome if they can participate in adult thoughts and philosophy.

That said, some forms of "expression" are not welcome. Those include, but are not limited to:

As explained to one troublemaker:

This is simply not a cut-em-up, slash-em-down, fuck-em-up type of site. This community prefers philosophy and idealism and debate to blood and death and felony crimes and gore.

And this is not to say that such thoughts don't have their proper moment, but these should be the exception, not the rule.

The general criteria used to make the very difficult decision of removing a work from the site is this:

Does the work ATTEMPT to cause artistic, philosophical, or personal insight? Broad indeed...

So, if my work steps over this imaginary line, what will happen?

Most likely, the work will simply be removed, with a note possibly going to the author, if possible. If it continues to happen, the author may be asked to leave the community. Worst case scenario - we don't like to play hard ball, but will if we have too. Just play nice, alright?

What is the best way to get on the Scroll shitlist?

Impersonate another author. Impersonating another author on the site is a crime of utmost disrespect for personal privacy. It denegrates the responsibility that comes with personal freedom. Freedom is the right to personal choice - however, as soon as one attacks or impersonates another, your freedom has infringed upon another's freedom. Such attacks will not be tolerated.
