Song of the Neverlasting

Rosie Craig
1995

Longer ago than you can measure, There was a very ancient treasure. It was an everlasting mystery, The golden key to our sad history. I'll sing you the song of the neverlasting; I'll sing you the song of the ever-passing -- Civilizations stirred up dust And the key was lost in a heap of rust. A rubble of old lies conceals it still, While generations struggle and kill. This is the song of the neverlasting; This is the song of the ever-passing -- Wheels whir in a chaotic jungle; People trudge through, and fumble In the tangles of new ideas, and Progress, And living for the moment. A sea of constantly shifting morals, A sea of intrigue and national quarrels Shapes the world of the neverlasting, Shapes the world of the ever-passing. We threw away that ancient key That opens up Infinity, And now we look for nothing higher Than our knowledge and desire; And the god of Knowledge rises Up to give the world surprises; And we wonder at the void, And we turn to men like Freud To cope with the world of the neverlasting, To handle the world of the ever-passing... While the world spins round definitions And arguing politicians And evolutions and revolutions And ologies and isms.
