An Anthem

Scott Connell
1991

But, remember, lying on the death bed
of a dying sister of a tortured people
of a starving world,
where pleasure, pain, sex and love
are sold, sometimes over-the-counter
(but I'll get a prescription if you say so)
where my institution tells me
how to listen,
who to fuck,
when to die,
where Miller is the high life
but thou shalt not be high,
where red, white and Gilbey's gin
are the colours of the flag.
Life condemned by mortality
(oh please, sir, may I be mortal?)
Questions on my mind,
those questions I never got to ask,
no one ever tried to answer.
"Oh yes, sir, just take a number
and have a seat,
we'll be with you in a moment,
and then we'll fix this little problem
that your struggling generation is bearing.
Oh, and while you're waiting,
remember that the answer to life,
and probably all your questions, too,
is just say no."
