LOOKING THRU THE EYES OF ONE OF THE 140,000

1 The streets are quiet now. But just a couple of hours ago they
were filled with the sound of trumpets and hysterical screaming.
People ran about aimlessly, unsure where to go. There was no where to
go. I knew it. I just held on to the light pole and waited for the commotion
to settle. But the armed soldiers in black grabbed me and pulled me away.
That is when I first began to scream. The ground was openning up left and
right. Sulfur fumes spouted 100s of feet in the air. I thought he might
throw me in. I thought maybe i had done something wrong after all.
But then he just set me down on a horse with this guy holding a balance and
blindfolded. I saw huge, magnificent works of architecture come crashing to the
ground, confused people desparately trying to flee from the catastrophy, lest they
be crushed underneath the destruction. The damage was too massive for us to stand
our grand, so we rode off to the top of a hill, where we quietly watched a city ravaged
by flames. I looked up at the red moon and smiled. Then I rested my head against the
back of this man and closed my eyes.
2 He let me sleep in his arms like a baby in a cradle. He never stirred from his watchful lookout spot. When I finally woke up, he just tilted his head down at me and then turned back to the city. I looked and tried to make sense of it. Landmarks destroyed, buildings burned, fires raging out of control, smoke as thick as my Granny's soup reached upwards in little straight lines. I kept looking for anyone below, yet the only thing moving was the fire as it leapt from building to building as it was carried by the wind. I started to cry.
"Hush child. Things will get better. You will see. You are in the new age."
I wondered what he meant by that, but failed to bring up enough courage to ask.
"Calm yourself child. You will soon see what I mean."
Now most people would have been shocked at his sentence, yet his words possessed a kind of ease that make me feel safe in his arms. It reminded me of all those summers I spent on my Aunt's farm as I layed in the pasture and watched the clouds pass by. I soon passed off into a restful slumber as I closed my eyes once more.
3
When I woke again, I found myself laying on the liberty statue in central park. confused i looked around, not seeing anyone that i knew. I slowly climbed down from the concrete horse, my muscles in knots from the uncomfortable position I had been in. This is odd, I thought, as I realized that there wasn't a single person around. Central park, middle of the day, this is too wierd.
4 As I stood there looking, I realized what had dawned. This was the end of the world. The beginning of a new era of humanity. The impact of this idea hit me so string I collapsed to the ground, arms outstreched as tears fell down my face from eyes closed tight from hurt. Without even realizing what I was doing, I screamed loud and long. Tears continued to fall like a leaky faucet does in a house vacant. My scream was turning into something hoarse when I finally realized what was going on. It took me a while though before I could collect myself and stop my crying all together. When I was finally able to conentrate on something other than the fact that I was alone, it was near dark. So I started to prioritize what I needed to do. "Ok. Gotta find someplace to sleep with water and food that is safe to have." So I started on my mission to find the place to start civilization once more.
