TWO STONES

There were two stones on that rocky path
Lying side-by-side and stepped upon
By those who passed unheeding
Of any journey but their own.

Two stones softened through the years
From tears and scuffs, yet finding
Deep delight within each other
Their contours formed a resting place.

Until one day a careless foot dislodged
The stones and in their place was left
A hollow memory that marked the path
And left for all a vacancy.
