An ancient recipe card
I found behind the stove
The day we emptied out the house
Where she had lived until
She quietly passed away
A month or so ago

Stained and brittle from the years
The blue ink faded now
It called for flour, sugar milk
And dried blueberries by the cup.

In my hand, the card a window
On that day sixty years ago
When we sat surrounded by
The warm aromas of her home
And ate the muffins she had baked.

In my mind and heart I see
The two of us - I was only ten -
As if it were but yesterday
The winter light so different then
A rich and golden patina
Touching everything.
