This world might be a darker depth
Than all these sparkling, rancid cities.
My populace escapes into itself.
My fierce, windswept cathedral dome
Goes wandring cluttered streets
To find that I'm just talking to myself

And the resonating chambers
Where the one true voice resides
Can't seem to keep soliloquy at bay
So cathedrals skirt the oceans
To be ravaged by the tides
To grasp the vagrant tumult of the fray.

Dark waters lurch and rise in search of orifice in edifice
The vibrant pannelled glass to smash
The walls to crumble; tumble down to pebbles once again.
It will be pebbles once again

And each will scatter through the water,
Helter-skelter, skitter, sink
To become pearls and stones and mountaintops
And monoliths and artifice

Oh, but if I could maintain
A single thought or goal or gain and hold it fast -
Nothing can last.
