These are so beautiful, strangely enough, each one leaves me
feeling empty....
Shere

This morning I will not
comb my hair.
It has lain
pillowed on the hand of my lover.
-Kakinomoto no Hitomaro

Your hair has turned white
while your heart stayed
knotted against me.
I shall never
loosen it now.
-Kakinomoto no Hitomaro

In the dusk
the road is hard to see.
Wait 'till moonrise,
so I can watch you go.
-Oyakeme, a girl of Buzen, Manyoshu

In the Autumn mountains
the colored leaves are falling.
If I could hold them back,
I could still see her.
-Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
